People in the tech industry infamously like acronyms. So much indeed that they sometimes turn perfectly normal words into something that looks like an acronym or initialism.
The following list contains words that I’ve often seen used as if they were acronyms, possibly because their actual meaning wasn’t known or in some cases because the name may have been stylized within a logo in all-caps at some point. The list is intended to be entertaining and maybe a bit informative. Although often misspelled, these are not acronyms:
- GIT
- JAVA
- JIRA
- SCRUM
- LOG
- DEVOPS
- REPO
- TEAMS
- ENUM
- AGILE
My hot take: If someone who uses Git or Java or practices Scrum doesn’t know how the name is spelled (and maybe even where it comes from), they probably haven’t read enough about the thing they are using.
Did I miss any? There are probably many more normal English words or technical terms that are assumed to be acronyms by a programmer or project manager somewhere.
